I feel Traveller is much more than a game, and it’s more than any one person.
But if it was one person, can anyone dispute that one person would be Marc Miller? He’s the ultimate source of cannon, provides compulsory direction for the brand, holds complete control over licensing and production, and is the ultimate source of truth and court of last resort for questions.
Lately I’m revisiting MegaTraveller – where the Imperium in plunged into civil war and Charted Space goes through some seriously Hard Times – and a disconcerting thought occurs to me, which leads to a very direct question:
What happens to Traveller – the brand moving forward, the IP, how things grow, the direction it follows, and activity that moves various balls forward – when Mr. Miller leaves this mortal realm and claims his everlasting reward?
immediately, I feel I need to add the following: I want to say with as much gravitas as I can I mean zero disrespect by asking the above question. I am humbly in awe of Mr. Miller’s accomplishments over the years, and I understand how some might see the question in poor taste. I’m sure no one liked to think about Apple after Steve Jobs.
But really, for this thing we all love… are there continuity plans?
I’m just a fan. I don’t need to be privy to any of that. It is all certainly and definitely none of my business. But I’m hopeful some discussions have taken place.
I love the people in this community more than anything – interacting, learning from, sharing, and growing this thing we all enjoy. The people are first, and the material and how it’s handled is certainly secondary to the connections we all share.
But how the brand evolves matters; certainly now, and definitely after a man we all respect and cherish leaves us to continue his vision.
